The body of a homeless woman who was found murdered in a Melbourne park has been identified - as the search for her killer enters its second day.
Police in Melbourne have charged a 27-year-old man with the murder of Courtney Herron.
"This was a particularly, particularly horrendous attack", Homicide squad Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said on Sunday.
Initial post-mortem results have not found evidence of sexual violence against Herron.
Stamper added she was known to have had issues with drugs and mental health.
She had been couch surfing, but it was not clear whether she had been sleeping in the park.
The park is a short distance from Princes Park, where aspiring comedian Eurydice Dixon's body was found on June 12 a year ago.
Police were seen in Royal Park on Saturday. "Family relationships can be fragmented but I stress that doesn't mean families out there don't love their children".
Tributes have since been flowing in Victoria and across the country for Ms Herron following a recent spate of killings involving young women.
Courtney Herron was found dead in a Melbourne park.
Eurydice Dixon's body was discovered in Princes Park in Carlton North in June previous year, just a few kilometres away from today's grisly discovery.
"What is it in our community that allows some men to think that it's still okay to attack women or take from women what they want?" he said.
Stamper said Herron lived a transient lifestyle, where she had sporadic contact with several different people. Her family have been told of her death.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday described the 25-year-old's death as "a awful tragedy".
In April Natalina Angok's body was found dumped in Chinatown, allegedly killed by her one-time partner Christopher Allen who has been charged.
The park where Herron's body was found is a popular area in Melbourne, with Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius describing it as an "awful shock".
"We as a community should be protecting these people and we didn't".
Police were unable to confirm if the attack on Herron was random or sexually motivated, however both of these possibilities are being investigated.
