The defending Stanley Cup champions are not going down without a fight in the National Hockey League playoffs.
Ovechkin caught the fellow Russian with his right fist, sending the back of his head crashing hard into the ice. (The fight can be seen here.) The rookie fell to the ice and had to be helped up and into the dressing room after the first-period fight, and he did not return to the game. Heading into last night's game, the Capitals were up 2-0 in the series, although that all changed when they lost by a score of 5-0 in game three. We're always careful. This year, we've dealt with [concussions] with I don't know how many guys and when they were ready to come back, we waited weeks after.
"I'm not a big fighter, and he's the same", Ovechkin said.
"It's a little bit frustrating, because he got hurt, it's his first fight", Brind'Amour said.
Ovechkin addressed the fight after the game was over, saying "I hope [Svechnikov] is okay". He's played 90 games.
"First of all I hope he's okay", Ovechkin said. In any other sport, you can jaw all you want and nothing is going to happen. So that stuff bothers me.
The Capitals lead the series 2-1 going into Game 4 on Thursday.
