Emergency responders arrived to find the woman, Sydney Monfries, lying on the floor of the Keating clock tower with trauma to her head and body.
University officials said they're investigating how Monfries and her friends got inside the tower.
She was with other seniors when she fell through an opening on the first landing of the tower, the paper reported.
The Fordham University student newspaper even featured quotes from students who had climbed to the peak of the tower.
'He told me some seniors [wanted to go] to the tower to take some pictures and have a good time before graduating, ' he said.
The accident occurred early in the morning before Fordham's annual Spring Preview event for admitted students.
Although it is restricted, climbing the tower is a common trend among students who are set to graduate, reports said.
Just weeks from graduation, a 22-year-old OR woman joined some friends in a senior tradition at Fordham University - climbing the stairs to the top of the New York university's iconic clock tower, the New York Daily News reported.
Sydney Monfries will be honored with posthumous bachelor's degree from Fordham University after dying on the school's Bronx campus on Sunday.
"It's like a tradition, apparently, for seniors to sneak into the tower and climb up", student Antonia Greene said, CBS reported.
"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", a senior student told the news outlet.
"In the past, authorized University officials have sometimes given tours of the tower, in part to satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization", the spokesperson said.
In their statement, Fordham University also confirmed that they would be giving Monfries a posthumous degree that will be given to her parents.
However, another student said they aren't sure.
