Nowitzki finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the finale of his storied 21-season career - all with the Mavericks.
Nowitzki became emotional during a standing ovation by the AT&T Center crowd. Marks grew up in the Dallas area, and says Nowitzki was his sports hero.
Nowitzki seriously considered coming back to play one more season as the prospect of competing alongside the Mavericks' talented, young corps that next season will include Kristaps Porzingis, had to be tantalizing for the cagey 40-year-old German.
During the game, Dirk was caught tearing up during a tribute video honoring the man who brought the Mavericks a championship in 2011. It was odd the league scheduled Nowitzki, his retirement possible if not probable, for an away back-to-back. "All the fans have supported me..." Then he saw Charles Barkley on the court.
"I'll promise you that you have a job for life".
The 14-time All-Star gave the home folks the thrill of passing Wilt Chamberlain to regain sixth on the career scoring list last month.
And while his in-game performance was certainly something worth remembering, it will likely be his pre-game emotion that provides the lasting image from Dirk's final game.
"The fans have shown me a lot of love already on the road, even though I obviously haven't announced that this is going to be it", Nowitzki said in February. "I still kind of got to focus on the game". Nowitzki was experiencing flare-ups in his feet and ankles late this season. He made many unpublicized trips to the hospital over the years.
