The feature is being rolled out on both PlayStation 4 consoles and web browsers tomorrow.
Online ID changes are not available to PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita gamers. But, you can only select this option at the time you are changing your online ID.
Q: How many times can I change my ID? PlayStation Plus members only have to pay $4.99/£3.99 for every subsequent change.
Additionally, PS4 owners can revert to their original ID - as long as it doesn't violate Sony's terms of service - for free as many times as they wish. Players can also revert back to their old ID for free but must contact PlayStation support to do so.
Fortnite players on PlayStation can now change their PSN IDs! Tested titles have been helpfully divided into three categories: Games with No Known Issues, Games with Issues Identified, and Games with Critical Issues.
For example: a game released in 2015 has been re-mastered or re-sold as a complete edition in 2018 will not support the ID change feature. If you have a child, Sony stated child accounts can not change their online ID.
A large majority of the most-played PS4 games that we tested support the feature.
If you do decide to change your name, just check the list of supported titles and make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot. Sony says that while "all PS4 games originally published on or after April 1, 2018 have been developed to support the online ID change feature", it found an instance where a game from this time period "did not fully support the feature" during its beta preview program previous year. How do I know that I won't run into these?
If that sounds like too much to remember, you can check this handy list of tested games and potential issues. We expect major issues to occur only in a small number of games. Your save progress might get lost, progress towards trophies might disappear, and it actually affects some pretty big games. Playing these games may mean you still have to use your old username, and there's a chance that you could lose access to DLC.
Other games that are also now facing issues are Grand Theft Auto 5, National Basketball Association 2K19, and The Last of Us, but those issues are only related to displaying users' previous PlayStation ID.
