At 2:40pm local time in central Christchurch, reports surfaced of a shooting featuring "multiple" gunmen who opened fire at two separate mosques.
He confirmed media reports that the gunman who mowed down worshippers in two mosques in the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch was an Australian-born citizen.
However, what comes across as a weird part of the awful act was that in the Facebook live-stream of the shooting, one of the gunmen says: "Remember, lads, subscribe to PewDiePie". The attacks seem to be a carefully planned and the authorities detained four people and defused explosive devices that are said to have belonged to the attackers.
About the attacker's name, Brenton Tarrant, the police stated that: 'I know there is a name within the public domain but it would be improper for me now to confirm that because a person has been charged'.
Although he has had the highest number of YouTube subscribers for five years, he has regularly stoked controversy over his videos.
"You had nothing to do with this".
Before the attack, it's believed the shooter published a 74 page manifesto online, in which he said he was inspired by Norway mass murderer Anders Breivik.
Another said: "This isn't about a Swedish man who makes video entertainment for a living".
Meanwhile, Bangladesh cricket team's tour of New Zealand has been called off in the wake of the attack. "People on both sides of the political aisle-especially the victims-deserve a more honest conversation".
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that police were treating the incident as a terrorist attack and said it was "one of New Zealand's darkest days".
The massacres took place from 1.40pm this afternoon at the Masjid Al Noor and Linwood Masjid mosques.
