"I saw them get out of the parking lot, within five minutes one of the players [Iqbal] called me for help - he said save us, we are in big trouble someone is shooting." said Isam.
After arriving at the site, the team were reportedly told to stay on the bus outside the mosque on Deans Avenue before travelling back to Hagley Oval on foot.
The team was on a bus that was approaching the Al Noor mosque for Friday prayers on the eve of the third test at nearby Hagley Oval when the shooting began. "Again both teams and support staff groups are safe", the Black Caps tweeted. I don't know how many (shots) there were.
Senior opener Tamim Iqbal has tweeted: "Entire team got saved from active shooters!". He described the experience as "frightening".
Local media report multiple casualties at one mosque and say another had been evacuated.
The Masjid Al Noor in central Christchurch was filled with worshippers, when the attack happened, as was a second mosque in Linwood.
"We've cancelled the game", said New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White.
Player Mushfiqur Rahim posted "Alhamdulillah Allah save us today while shooting in Christchurch in the mosque".
"It's obviously early days in a fairly fluid situation (but) it's something that we as New Zealanders have to look at as well", he said.
Isam said he was contacted by one of the players as the shooting was taking place and he raced towards the scene.
Bangladesh's team were "50 yards" from the mosque, team manager Khaled Mashud said.
People in central Christchurch have been urged to stay indoors as an "active shooter" situation is underway.
Three men and a woman are in custody, police said, adding that they had found and neutralised a number of IEDS (improvised explosive devices). They have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home ... they are us. Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand. However, all the players safely back in the hotel but they are in a shock.
The players were initially barred from leaving the bus but, after several minutes, disembarked and made their way through to the Hagley Park ground.
