Police Spokesman Pablo Castillo said the body of Catherine Shaw, 23, of Witney, England, was discovered at a mountain overlook called Nariz del Indio, or Indian Nose. My friend has been missing since last Monday in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
Guatemalan police, local residents and British people in the country helped search for Shaw near the area where the puppy was found over the weekend.
Her parents put up a video appeal on the Twitter account of the Lucie Blackman Trust, a British charity that provides support to the families who have relatives missing, murdered or in a crisis overseas.
A body has been found in the hunt for British woman Catherine Shaw who went missing in Guatemala.
"The case will now be handed over to the team that will carry out the criminal investigation, so as to find out what happened". "Please respect their privacy at this hard time".
"Catherine left the hotel on Tuesday March 5 in the early hours of the morning, at 1.37am to be exact, taking with her a musical instrument".
Desperate’ Family’s video appeal
The Lucie Blackman Trust, a charity supporting the famiy, also confirmed the news - saying they "believe" the body is Catherine.
It added: "Formal identification has not taken place but the body is believed to be Catherine".
She left again for the last time at 5.23am, heading in the direction of the lake.
The trust said it had received many sightings of female travellers matching Catherine's description, and it had become clear that there are at least three travellers similar to her hiking in the area.
Whilst of course at this stage we do not know the full facts, and can not rule anything out until we do, it is wrong to assume and of course confirm that she was raped and murdered by a mystery assailant when such facts are not evident.
In a video released by the trust, Ms Shaw's mother urged her to get in touch as they need to know she is happy and well, while her father described his daughter as about 5ft 7in and of slim build. "Please come home, sweetheart".
