At 8:20 a.m.an Air Transat pilot flying from Canada to Florida requested an emergency at Newark Liberty Airport after reporting smoke inside the aircraft, according to Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey.
Flight TS942 took off from Montreal around 7:10 a.m. ET and landed safely in Newark, N.J., around 8:30 a.m.
They exited the plane onto the runway using emergency slides, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Passengers were evacuated onto the runway via emergency slides, said airline spokeswoman Debbie Cabana.
One person tweeted the scene of the incident, with the plane on the runway and emergency vehicles surrounding the aircraft.
Two passengers sustained "minor injuries" unrelated to the smoke condition, sources said.

Those traveling through the airport are advised to contact your airline for flight status updates.
Julie Chauvin said she and nine of her family members were travelling to Fort Lauderdale for a cruise when they were told over the loudspeaker to follow emergency procedures in preparation for landing.
Chauvin said the incident was managed in an organized fashion, and passengers were well treated.
Officials now say there was no fire on board and the what caused the smoke is under investigation.
Nevertheless, she said it's not an experience she wants to repeat. Another aircraft was to be sent to Newark to operate the flight to Fort Lauderdale, she said.
