Nonetheless, NASA has announced that on March 29, the world's first all-female spacewalk is going to take place. Christina Koch and Anne McClain will be the first all-female crew to do a spacewalk. "These spacewalks were originally scheduled to take place in the fall". She will carry out her first spacewalk with Nick Hague on March 22. She did say that schedules and assignments could vary always.
While McClain is now on the ISS, Koch is set to blast off on March 14 to reach the space station.
In the last six decades of spaceflight, there have only been four times when missions included two female members trained for spacewalks.
USA astronaut Christina Hammock Koch, a member of the International Space Station expedition, attends her final exam at the Gagarin Cosmonauts' Training Center in Star City outside Moscow, Russia, Feb. 20, 2019. The objective of the spacewalk is to replace batteries that were installed last summer, per the Guardian.
The announcement came from Facciol's tweet on March 1.
Both of them were selected in 2013, and this will be McClain's and Koch's first spacewalk. NASA revealed that their most recent class of flight directors was also 50 percent women, which potentially heralds a change for the face of NASA's space exploration in the future.
In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova, a citizen of Russian Federation, became the first woman to fly in space.
Less than 11% of the more than 500 people who have been to space are women, the Guardian reported. This will be the first-ever spacewalk with all-female spacewalkers.
The announcement was tweeted by Facciol herself on first of March: "I just found out that I'll be on console providing support for the FIRST ALL-FEMALE SPACEWALK with @AstroAnnimal and @Astro_Christina and I cannot contain my excitement!"
Besides the McClain and Koch, several other prominent women are supporting this historic spacewalk. They landed safely a few minutes later, after reaching the fringes of space, and were reassigned to fly again after McClain, Kononenko and Saint-Jacques launched in early December.
Koch is an electrical engineer who will make her space flight debut with Expedition 59, NASA said in a statement.
