There's a glimpse of Annette Bening holding a gun.
Yet Empire's Helen O'Hara - one of the few female critics to review the film - still regards it as an "essential. feminist fable" that "delivers in a more satisfying way than nearly any other superhero film of recent years".
Marvel Studios is known for combining equal amount of action and humor in its movies.
"Captain Marvel" relates the origin of hero Nick Fury summoned via high-tech pager just before he was done and dusted at the end of "Avengers: Infinity War".
The supporting cast offers some of the film's most enjoyable surprises. She is trained by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), the commander of Starforce. They and their conspicuous stunt doubles engage in a battle with punches and judo throws. All she needs is the classic bellhop hat. She just wants to get the job done. Its clunky first act plops audiences on Carol's personal journey as she traverses through space with the Kree army that took her in. Any Kree soldier could be a Skrull in disguise.
Larson arrived at Good Morning America on Wednesday donning a bright blue Derek Lam 10 Crosby suit that reminded me of a costume from a Wes Anderson film-something about the saturated blue mixed with black and red piping. She takes an Earth name, because Vers sounds silly. There she meets Nick Fury in the form of Samuel L Jackson, convincingly digitally altered to look 25 years younger. She was presumably allowed the use of it by S.H.I.E.L.D.as a government employee, so why didn't SHIELD come looking for it upon her death? Jackson's scenes as the sceptical Fury are highlights of the film, adding a touch of playfulness. Otherwise, with the exception of Mendelsohn's droll delivery and a stowaway cat named Goose (who knew that zero gravity cats could be so amusing?), this is an uncharacteristically dry affair for the MCU. Vers aims a fist and beams of energy poke a hole through a metal door. "I don't remember ever having a conversation saying, "There will not be a love interest.' There was only a conversation, 'We're telling Carol Danvers" origin story.' And this was her origin story, and her origin story was focused on her growth and the female friends and mentors and inspirations around her". "That is absolutely her superpower". Unfortunately, they're mostly with characters not named Carol.
For starters, it's set in the 1990s. There's a great meta-moment when a random guy tells Vers to smile, echoing a line that internet trolls have thrown at Larson herself.
Thanks to her role, at 5ft7in, Brie can now impressively dead-lift 225lbs, hip-thrust 400lbs, and even push a jeep up a hill. The directors are Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, tackling their first franchise affair after a solid career making small, smart, powerful dramas ("Half Nelson" in 2006, "Sugar" in 2008, a terrific gambling flick no one saw called "Mississippi Grind" in 2015). Like Larson's, their voices are overwhelmed by Marvel's homogeneous style.
Fair Warning: This article will contain some spoilers for the first collection of Captain Marvel volume 7.
Some might argue that many men also get told to lighten up and smile (often by women) and it is certainly universally infuriating when it happens but is it actually a feminist issue?
That it does it all this with aplomb is another win for Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige's practice of hiring innovative indie film directors - like "Thor: Ragnarok's" Taika Waititi, "Black Panther's" Ryan Coogler, "Guardians of the Galaxy's" James Gunn - to steer these big-budget action vehicles.
It is unknown if the low Rotten Tomatoes score is cause for concern but as the movie gets released tonight for advanced previews, we'll get an idea of the weekend's box office.
Rather than simply being the new entry in a massive, decade-long entertainment takeover coordinated by Disney and Marvel, Captain Marvel is now a kind of litmus test.
