Like the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X features a battery on each side of the device. Much like the Mate X and the foldable phone Royale showed off a while ago, Oppo's device folds outward instead of inward.
Huawei has also announced that its offering will have 5G connection while the Galaxy Fold will only be 4G-enabled. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, you can only run 2 apps side-by-side at a time on the Mate X, which isn't too bad but the Galaxy Fold's ability to run three apps at a time is going to be really useful.
"They made some interesting design choices that not only make the Mate X look different, but in many eyes better than Samsung", Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies told CNET, a leading website for tech product news. Chinese smartphone makers came out in force at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to show off handsets that you won't be able to use for ages.
Samsung has detailed some of its plans for the launch of the Galaxy Fold later this year and further emphasized that the Fold is a high-end luxury device.
The Mate X folds completely flat and is 11mm thick, not much thicker than many current phones.
"If this is an accurate representation of the competition, it underlines just what a great job Huawei has done with its industrial design on its foldable", Wood commented. On the outside, Huawei's main screen is a 6-inch 19.5:9 2480 x 1148 display while the Fold has a tiny 4.6-inch 1960x840 12:9 display. Samsung's phone has a triple-lens camera on the rear (12 MP telephoto + 12 MP wide-angle + 16 MP ultra-wide), a dual-lens camera on the front (10 MP selfie + 8 MP RGB depth), and a single-lens camera (10 MP) on the outside display.
That is because, unlike the Galaxy Fold, the hardware folds in on itself, meaning only one panel is needed. That makes the folding devices the most expensive phones to date, excluding low-volume, jewelry-like phones from companies like Vertu that can top $10,000.
The Mate X also features a ridge into which the device's sensors are built. It is powered by the Kirin 980, coupled with the Balong 5000 modem for 5G connectivity, 8GB RAM, and 512Gb internal storage. Yes, 55W SuperCharge as it is called by Huawei and it charges the smartphone to 85% in just 30 minutes.
In an era where companies such as Xiaomi are challenging the high-cost of smartphones, the leaders in this field show no signs of reducing prices.
