Wilson-Raybould resigned from the Liberal cabinet last week - but emerged from the cabinet room Tuesday afternoon after addressing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ministers.
Since the story of alleged political interference in the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin affair broke Gerald Butts has resigned from his position as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and Jody Wilson-Raybould has resigned from her position as the Minister of Veterans Affairs.
The Globe and Mail newspaper reported this month that Trudeau or his staff pressured Wilson-Raybould to try to avoid a criminal prosecution of Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin over allegations of corruption involving government contracts in Libya. Liberals use their majority to call one closed-door meeting and hear from senior officials (Lametti as justice minister, the top bureaucrat in his department, and the clerk of the Privy Council) who can talk about the tension between the minister of justice's duties as a politician and his or her responsibilities as attorney general of Canada.
Butts is one of several Trudeau aides the opposition parties had wanted to call before the House of Commons justice committee to testify on what happened in the SNC-Lavalin affair.
As for cabinet confidentiality, surely Trudeau has implicitly waived that by discussing previously private conversations about what he says Wilson-Raybould asked him about the SNC-Lavalin case, and how he responded. Butts says the accusations are "simply not true".
Wilson-Raybould in an unusual move met with members of the cabinet on Tuesday.
"The allegations threaten to impugn the integrity of the prime minister's office. he felt he would be more of a distraction if he stayed", said a government official.
Spring 2018 - The federal Liberals table and pass a budget bill that includes a change to the Criminal Code allowing "remediation agreements", plea-bargain-like deals between prosecutors and accused corporations in which they can avoid criminal proceedings by making reparations for previous bad behaviour.
In his statement, Butts writes positively of his relationship with Wilson-Raybould.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday thanked his principal secretary, with whom he was photographed as young men on the steps of the Arts Building at McGill, "for his service and continued friendship". She has yet to say anything publicly and has hired former Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell to advise her on what she can say, given the solicitor-client privilege that covered her dealings as attorney general.
Since the allegations broke, Jody Wilson-Raybould has cited her solicitor-client privilege as a reason for her silence on the matter.
"He's been remarkably effective at guiding this government towards the types of policies that make a big impact for Canadians", said Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Quebec MP Jean-Yves Duclos.
"It's obviously a sad moment for me and Gerry's many friends. having said that, our work goes on", Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters.
Wilson-Raybould said today she remains a Liberal MP.
"In the matter of solicitor-client privilege, the member opposite must know that there are real dangers of unintended consequences, particularly on the two court cases now wending their way through the courts", Trudeau said.
