Smollett said he didn't want to call police at first, but that his friend and creative director, Frank Gatson, called on his behalf.
"I understand how hard it will be to find them but we gotta", Smollett said.
Smollett said his manager was still on the phone, which had fallen out of his pocket.
"I noticed the rope around my neck and I started screaming 'There's a f***ing rope around my neck", he said.
When Roberts asks if at anytime during the attack he feared for his life, the musician is seen breaking into tears.
Police raided the home of the two Nigerian "persons of interest" Wednesday night and seized computer records and forensic evidence.
"For me, when that was released I was like 'Ok, we are getting somewhere, '" Smollett said. They called him an Empire ... and they used a homophobic slur.
He also explained why he hesitated to report the attack.

Smollett said it took police about 30 minutes to respond.
He says he was beaten, doused with bleach and had a rope wrapped around his neck. He said the attackers yelled "this is "MAGA" country", but never said they were wearing "MAGA" hats.
The outlet also claimed that Smollett was being questioned over the incident again but police would not confirm that fact either.
"I'm sorry but I'm not going to do that", Smollett said, describing his immediate reaction. "A lot more", Smollett told GMA. Smollett is expressing anger over being attacked outside his Chicago apartment last month.
He added: "I don't know what that's gonna be, to hand over my phone for - and honestly, by then, inaccurate, false statements had already been put out there". I kept walking. And then I heard f****t Empire n****r. There's no which way you cut it.
