The Lakers this week were in repeated talks with the Pelicans, and at one point offered what felt like the entire Lakers roster outside of James for the star, along with multiple draft picks.
The league tried to satiate the demands for those fans, and on Thursday, the captains for the 2019 All-Star Game - LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo - came together in a pre-recorded segment on TNT to make their selections.
Wade publicly said last week that he expected James to take him.
"I might pick Steph because he picked me first a year ago, so I've got to return the favour", Antetokounmpo said after Milwaukee's 113-94 victory over Brooklyn. "Now I have to go into shuffle mode now". While James added some suspense at first, he ended up taking his long-time peer and former teammate in Wade, leaving Giannis with Nowitzki. Barkley, while sitting in the studio, had the flawless way for Antetokounmpo to make a trade for Davis.
James and Antetokounmpo taped their selections Thursday morning, and TNT aired their picks in the evening.
Curry will be playing in his home town during the February 17 game in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Following the draft, Antetokounpo traded Simmons to Team LeBron for Westbrook. That outcome was "definitely on objective", Antetokounmpo said.
True to draft form, the opportunity to trade then resulted in James and Antetokounmpo trading Simmons (who James referred to as "his guy") for Russell Westbrook.
"F-- no", Westbrook replied, while Embiid said of his nemesis, "I don't know why he was mad".
Here are the final all-star rosters, listed in order of how they were drafted (note that the captains alternated picks in each round and that, before the trade, Simmons was taken four spots ahead of Westbrook).
