Average workers' wages kept growing, with hourly earnings for non-managers rising 3.4 percent from the year before. The BLS also indicated that almost all of this increase was in the private sector and may reflect the impact of the partial federal government shutdown.
However, the Labor Department said earlier it would consider the 800,000 federal workers affected by the shutdown fully employed.
The healthy gain the government reported Friday illustrated the job market's durability almost a decade into the economic expansion.
NOGUCHI: Well, as you mentioned, hiring was, surprisingly, very strong - 304,000.
Government shutdown or not, this looked like a big report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for January's employment situation. The string of job growth underscores the long economic expansion since the Great Recession.
The 380,000 furloughed federal workers counted as "employed" in the Establishment Survey, which calculates payroll numbers, but unemployed in the Household Survey, which calculates unemployment rate. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.
"Meanwhile, House Republicans overwhelmingly voted against a pay raise for federal civilian workers, refusing to respect the perseverance and patriotism of the men and women who were just furloughed or forced to work without pay", Pelosi said. Job gains were seen mostly in leisure and hospitality, construction, health care and transportation.
The government added 8,000 jobs last month. "Federal workers, many of them veterans, saw their financial security shaken, their credit ratings harmed, and their lives upended by the longest shutdown in history".
While the new jobs report was higher than expected, the jobs report for December was adjusted down by 70,000 jobs from 312,000 jobs created that month to 222,000.
North said the rate is almost a flawless number, "not too hot" so as to spark fears of inflation, but "not too cold" to raise concerns about wage stagnation. The government also incorporated new population estimates, which had no impact on the unemployment and labor force participation rates.
One issue to consider, aside from the government shutdown, is that sometimes attention has to be paid to the special notes and changes made to the pooling of information. Stocks on Wall Street rose, while U.S. Treasury prices fell. By contrast, the overall economy has increased the number of jobs by 1.9%-and 0.2% last month. The BLS noted that there was an increase in the unemployment rate as laid-off federal workers filed for benefits. Hiring was likely boosted by mild temperatures in January. "That doesn't necessarily signal a dramatic change in the trend for the job market or the USA economy".
"I am right now planning our first family vacation in three years", she said.
