The Model Y will be the first of Tesla's vehicles that will be produced at Tesla's Gigafactories, as Musk announced that the company plans to build the Model Y completely at its Gigafactory 1 in Sparks, Nevada.
Speaking to analysts following Tesla's Q4 earnings report, CEO Elon Musk said he estimates global Model 3 demand to reach 700,000 to 800,000 units per year in a strong economy. The 2020 production plan looks aggressive at first glance, but it's possible because the Model Y crossover would share about 75% of its parts with the mass-market Model 3 vehicle.

"Thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of our manufacturing teams, by mid-2018 we successfully overcame these challenges and stabilized Model 3 production at high volumes", the firm added. Tesla posted its second consecutive quarterly profit on Wednesday, but missed Wall Street's expectations - sending its stock lower on concerns about bumps in the road ahead. Tesla Inc has a 1 year low of $244.59 and a 1 year high of $387.46.
While Tesla is pumping money into a Shanghai factory, which it hopes to bring on line around the end of this year with a target of producing 500,000 vehicles a year, several analysts questioned whether that investment will pay off. Zach Kirkhorn, the company's current vice president of finance, will replace him as CFO.
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk and retiring CFO Deepak Ahuja plan to immediately deliver its USA -made Model 3 sedans to China and to start the operation of its Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory this year while there is a truce on the tariff war between China and the United States.
