IPhone FaceTime bug lets you listen in on someone before they answer

Apple has acknowledged a bug in its FaceTime app allows users to hear the microphone feed from their contacts' devices, even if the contact doesn't pick up the call.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the FaceTime bug can be activated when a caller adds his or her own phone number through the Add Person feature during FaceTime Video call.

Apple Inc. customers discovered a software bug on Monday that lets people listen in on other users by way of the company's FaceTime video chat service.

As a result of the bug, it's actually possible to listen to an ongoing FaceTime conversation without the person on the other end knowing you can hear them. If you include yourself in the call, you will then start an audio call between yourself and the person you are ringing, even before they answer the call. The flaw was discussed on social media and picked up by website 9to5Mac.com.

On your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, head to Settings - FaceTime and then toggle the button right at the top to set FaceTime on or off (a green button on screen indicates FaceTime is on).

"We're aware of this issue and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week", an Apple spokesperson said in a statement.

It's likely that the update will be included in the public version of iOS 12.2, the same iteration of Apple's operating system that is set to bring Apple News to Canadian iPhone users. The issue affects any pair of iPhones running iOS 12.1 or later, but also calls made to Macs using Mojave.
