The Sony Open in Hawaii is contested at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
Then came the close.
After a 288 yard drive on the 423-yard par-4 second, Etulain chipped his fourth shot to 3 feet, which he rolled for one-putt bogey on the hole. But the veteran steadied himself down the stretch, racing past Putnam with a flurry of four birdies in seven holes on the back nine. He ended it with another birdie on the par-5 18th, his 24th of the week. He maintained his lead through the back nine as Putnam began to trail by more with a bogey on the par-4 16th.
"Last year I probably ground harder than I've done in the past", he said. If I keep plugging along, I knew good things would happen. Andrew was tough there.
"Getting that birdie on 15, getting that birdie on 16 - man that made 18 awfully nice to play", added the American, who is now well on his way to making a fifth US Presidents Cup team. It was a master class in lapping the field early and defending his turf late.
Welcome to the official YouTube channel of the PGA TOUR. He is 2-2 in his career when leading going into the final round.
The only other time Kuchar won twice in the same season was in 2013, when he won the Match Play Championship in Arizona in February and the Memorial in early June.
Kuchar ended a three-year drought by winning the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last fall. He went one better at Waialae at 18-under 192. He's a victor again, and for a guy who loves Hawaii, he was thrilled to already have a spot reserved at Kapalua for the winners-only field 50 weeks from now. About as good as it could have been without a win.
Love, who first played the Sony Open in 1986, missed by one shot matching the lowest 72-hole score of his career.

Kuchar sometimes comes to Hawaii with his wife and two kids even when he's not playing golf. "I wanted to do better on the back nine", said Imahira, whose second round also included a bogey on No. 2. He was just a little off around the greens and with his putter. Jordan Spieth had a short week despite a 66 in second round and missed the cut by one shot. Instead, it turned into the American's first top-10 finish since the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and his best result since winning the Desert Classic nearly exactly two years ago.
"I want to see how great this year can be", Kuchar said. Kuchar denied the number after the third round and said the two had an agreement in place at the start of the week.
I get where he's coming from and know that he's just trying to build confidence, but I might have to amend my "Spieth will win three times in 2019" take in a few weeks.
