Squaring off for the first time in their careers as they prepare for next week's Australian Open, Tomic dominated his higher-ranked opponent to win 6-3 6-4, as he finished off the match in freaky circumstances.
What we might get is an indication of where each player is at just days out from the Open.
Cilic added: "It took me some time to recover from the emotional end to last season with the Davis Cup".
He is also relaxed about his form heading into the first Grand Slam of the season next week.
Tomic ended his victory with a flourish, sending over a sneaky serve on match point by hitting the ball between his legs for a victor ― a move which totally caught Kyrgios off guard. After the match he was optimistic of a bigger and better year around. I need to be healthy to have a good year. "Ranking that stuff is temporary, I know I can go out there and trouble Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, I'm not anxious about going out there and losing 3 and 4 to BT".
Kyrgios, who was knocked out in the second round at Brisbane last week, was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by friend and fellow comeback candidate Bernard Tomic in an all-Australian battle.
"I'm not entirely sure what I will be doing but I think there will be more things on than the Australian Open draw", he said with a laugh.
After winning 5-7, 6-4, 10-6, Tomic is looking ahead to his clash on Wednesday againstKyrgios, who has also been struggling with form and motivation.
"It was another good training day.
I know it was just an exhibition, but he was pretty impressive".
Yet both players have maintained their off-court clashes of the past - notably almost three years ago when Tomic accused Kyrgios of faking an illness to get out of playing a Davis Cup match - are behind them, and considering the relaxed nature of this tournament, it's unlikely sparks will fly when the pair finally do face off across the net. I didn't play a lot of tennis past year ― which was my own fault.
