No, nothing of the sort will happen at the 2019 Oscars, but according to a recent report published by Variety, the ceremony may still do something quite radical, something it hasn't done in over 30 years: go without a host.
Kevin Hart officially stated that he will not host the Oscars this year.
Then last week, he spoke to Ellen DeGeneres in his first interview since stepping down, and she asked him to reconsider hosting the awards show. "I hope we can meet again". "I've done all that I can do".
"I'm over it", Hart said.
"I'm not saying how I've changed anymore, I'm not saying what I've done and what the new me is".
Unfortunately it did not go well for Hart. "I'm not saying what I've done, and what the new me is".
"These weren't words that I said to gay individuals". I'm done with it. "I'm literally, I'm over that, I'm over the moment". In my mind I got the job, it was a dream job, and things came up that simply prohibited it from happening. "I'm going to be me; I'm going to stand my ground". I aspire, I motivate.
He added: "I am not hosting the Oscars this year". I love to love. "I'm a good person, I love to love, if you don't see that, then.it's a problem with you". I shouldn't have to prove who I am.
Strahan further pressed the topic, asking Hart as a father what he would do if one of his children came out to him. "There is no end to it", Hart replied.
Do you think they'll be able to pull it off? "If you notice, I never even explained the tweets". Many also questioned Hart's framing of the initial backlash to his old tweets as a personal attack on his celebrity rather than a community demanding a respectful apology. If you keep peeling it, it just doesn't stop.
Strahan pushed Hart to offer more of a response beyond "I'm over it" and "I'm done with it", but he was met with more of the same. I am evolving and want to continue to do so.
The last time the Oscars aired without a host was in 1989.
Announcing his decision to step down, Hart said in a statement: "I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscars.this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many incredible talented artists". I've done it. I've done it several times, I've tweeted it, I've talked about it when I went on Ellen, I said it on my radio show, I'm just done. I'm about today. If (my apology is) accepted today, great.
