The lander sent back images taken shortly after its touchdown as well as a photo of the rover slowly rolling across the dusty lunar surface.
Macau University of Science and Technology professor Zhu Menghua called the landing "absolutely perfect" and a "big milestone" for China's space exploration because of the technical difficulties of landing in an uncharted territory.
The Communist controlled Global Times also said the probe had "successfully made the first-ever soft landing" on the far side of the moon. Its name comes from that of a Chinese goddess who, according to legend, has lived on the moon for millennia.
For the first time in history, a spacecraft has landed on the far side of the moon. (Pink Floyd released the album "The Dark Side of the Moon" in 1973.) Also likely unhelpful is an instinctual response to counter that misconception by arguing that there is no dark side of the moon.
However, while Chinese officials have insisted their country's ambitions are purely peaceful, the US Defence Department has accused it of pursuing activities aimed at preventing other nations from using space-based assets during a crisis.
The selection of a safe landing site on moon's far side - the hemisphere that always faces away from Earth - was one of the major tasks for the mission.
The spacecraft, which blasted off into the heavens on December 7, was in an elliptical orbit around the Moon, swinging within 15 kilometres (nine miles) of the lunar regolith.
The country last night was able to successfully land its Chang'e-4 spacecraft on the part of the moon that Earth can not see and no other spacecraft has reached before.
"The exploration will give us more information about the Moon than we have ever known, and that is critical", said Prof Zhu.
Chang'e 4, a combined lander and rover, will make astronomical observations and probe the structure and mineral composition of the terrain above and below the surface.
The rover has not yet separated from the lander section.
Precise details of the far side of the moon remain unknown.
There is much to explore on the far side of the moon.
State media reported that the unmanned probe has already sent back photos from the still-unexplored region of the moon. Chang'e-4 will examine this mysterious area of the Moon.
The US is the only other country that has carried out moon landings. It is planning to launch construction of its own manned space station next year.
