Veteran Bollywood actor-director-writer-comedian and a Quran scholar, Kader Khan has passed away today after a prolonged illness. "Kadar Khan passes away. sad depressing news.my prayers and condolences. a brilliant stage artist a most compassionate and accomplished talent on film. a writer of eminence; in most of my very successful films. a delightful company. and a mathematician", he tweeted.
A civil engineering professor at a Mumbai college, Kader Khan was discovered while performing in a college play.
The Indian film community paid tribute to Khan on Twitter. As per reports, the last rites will be held in a Toronto cemetery later in the day.
According to Bolly lore, Khan could not only write pages of dialogues effortlessly, he practised on their delivery at night in graveyards, where he would shout his dialogues to gauge the effect. In his own words, the actor in him helped the writer and vice versa. With Mehra he worked on films like "Jwalamukhi", "Sharaabi", "Lawaaris", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar". He entertained his audience with a number of comedy hits like Dulhe Raja, Coolie No.1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Raja Babu, Saajan Chale Sasural, Aunty No.1 and others.
The actor was a prolific screenwriter for Bollywood films in the 1970s and 80s. While numerous most iconic roles and dialogues of Amitabh were a creation of the terrific Salim-Javed combination, many others were a product of the collaboration between directors Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra with Khan.
Khan was a two-time recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue for "Meri Awaaz Suno" (1982) and "Angaar" (1993).
As the years rolled by, the roles dwindled.
He never officially retired but, in his own words, was somewhat lost in oblivion. I was a little unwell.
Hailing from a Pashtun family, he was born in Kabul in 1937.
He said he wanted to make a comeback as a writer and could tell that there was a "difference in the level of writing".
He reportedly slipped into the coma in the afternoon and breathed his last at 6 pm (as per the Canada time).
