Police will charge a 26-year-old man with the murder of missing backpacker Grace Millane. "At this point, we hold grave fears for her safety".
Detective Inspector Scott Beard addresses a press conference announcing the search for missing English backpacker Grace Millane is now a homicide investigation in Auckland, New Zealand, Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018.
The 26-year-old is the same man who was questioned previously by police and was with Ms Millane at several places, including Sky City, before going to CityLife Hotel with her.
"Grace's family has been advised of this development and they're devastated" Beard told the media.
Grace Millane was last seen at the city center of Auckland around 7 pm December 1.
Grace Millane had been in New Zealand for about two weeks.
Grace Millane - a 22-year-old woman from Essex, UK - arrived in New Zealand on November 20 as part of a year-long holiday.
Her passport is also missing.
"We don't know what's happened to the property of hers that has been missing", he said.
Police said they brought that man into the central Auckland police station on Saturday afternoon for questioning.
"Many of these calls have been from members of the public, offering accommodation and assistance to the Millane family".
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said a scene examination at the hotel is continuing and investigators were progressing with the viewing of hundreds of hours of CCTV footage. I'm not going to speculate on how they met.
Police released images of Ms Millane's watch and necklace earlier on Saturday.
Her father, a 60-year-old property developer, fought back tears as he urged anyone who has any information about his "outgoing, fun-loving" daughter to come forward.
The man was with her on Saturday evening, but Beard didn't know if the pair knew each other before then.
Photos on her Instagram showed she travelled to Cape Reinga with friends before returning to Auckland.
"There's family back in the United Kingdom and our hearts go out to them as well".
This was her first time travelling overseas alone.
"Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter", Mr Millane said on Friday.
He said: "I would just like to take this opportunity to appeal to anybody who has seen, spoken to or come into contact with Grace over the last few days to come forward with any detail, no matter how small, and contact the investigation team".
