Newton native John Krasinski's thriller "A Quiet Place" only earned a nod for Best Original Score, but his wife, Emily Blunt, scored a Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) nomination for "Mary Poppins Returns", one of four nominations for the film.
TNT received surprise nominations for the tiresome "The Alienist" - for limited series and for its star, the German actor Daniel Brühl. Chazelle didn't get a nomination, nor did screenwriter Josh Singer or star Ryan Gosling.
The original push centered on "The Dark Knight", Christopher Nolan's sequel to "Batman Begins", which failed to receive a best-picture nomination (although Heath Ledger was honored, posthumously, for his role as the Joker).
Also left out, to gasps heard across social media, was Ethan Hawke's performance as an anguished pastor in First Reformed and Pawel Pawlikowski's Polish stunner Cold War, his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Ida. She will also be the first Canadian to host the Globes.
The nominees for best animated film were: Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
"Crazy Rich Asians", the first major Hollywood movie in 25 years with an all-Asian cast, further diversified the Globes contenders with nods for best comedy and best actress for Constance Wu. And Samberg is no stranger to hosting award ceremonies: He also emceed the Emmys back in 2015.
