"We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life", Trump said in Argentina where he was attending the G20 summit.
He said Bush was the first president he ever voted for and was "the first president to teach me and many of us that in a democracy sometimes you fall short", and how you handle that, "is just as important as how you win". "He really does. He was a very special person".
There will be a departure ceremony for Bush at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and his casket will arrive at the Washington National Cathedral five miles away at 11 a.m.
The burial ceremony will not be open to the public.
After, he will lie in repose at Houston's St. Martin's Episcopal Church before his remains are transferred via rail to the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University, where he ultimately will be buried.
He was denied a second term by Arkansas Gov. Clinton, who would later become a close friend.
The funeral train will include UP No. 4141 George Bush Locomotive, which was unveiled October 18, 2005, during a ceremony near the library and museum on the Texas A&M University campus.
