Hegerberg has scored over 250 career goals at the age of 23, and for reasons unknown, Solveig believed it to be the flawless time to ask a professional female if she could twerk onstage.
French DJ Martin Solveig apologised and said he was taken aback by the stormy reaction online after he asked the inaugural women's Ballon D'Or victor Ada Hegerberg whether she could "twerk" live on stage.
Hegerberg hasn't played for Norway's national team since 2017 because of what she describes as a lack of respect for female players in her country, and she told the Associated Press that she has no plans to reconsider that decision.
Aside from her vast array of team honors, the first-ever women's football Ballon d'Or is far from Hegerberg's first individual trophy.
Solveig, a musician and radio host, apologised in person to Hegerberg and said he was "astonished" at the reaction.
'I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.
He also added that he duly explained to Hegerberg that his twerking proposition was a "joke".
Ada Hegerberg broke a major barrier for female soccer players by becoming the first woman to receive the Ballon d'Or, the highest individual honour in the sport.
Hegerberg didn't hide her offense at the request, shutting Solveig down by mouthing "no" and leaving the stage.
"I want to say thanks to France Football".
Football journalist Jason Pettigrove tweeted: "Martin Solveig, you are f***ing pathetic" while plenty of others took to social media to vent their fury about Hegerberg's treatment.
Reacting to being named Footballer of the Year, Modric said: "It is hard to express my emotion and how I feel in words".
"It is a huge step for women's football and the work you have put down is such an important thing for women's football and together we will make a difference".
Hegerberg is no stranger to the disrespect often levied at female footballers.
After lifting the trophy, Hegerberg addressed the crowd at the star-studded awards show, saying: "I want to ask every young woman to believe in themselves". I didn't really consider it a sexual harassment or anything in the moment.
A notable player was missing from the top three this year as Juventus ace Cristiano Ronaldo finished second while Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann finished at third place behind Modric.
