The win-win partnership answers customer needs for low-latency, fast, resilient satellite uplinks and downlinks. Spire now boasts one of the largest constellations of privately owned satellites in the world and has more than 30 ground stations worldwide.
"Storage, processing and analytics on top of it, have their benefits, but all of these things are hard for customers".
With the service, users can continue downloading data from satellites even during unplanned outages from weather-related events.
Lockheed Martin said that with almost 16,000 new satellites expected to be launched in the next decade, the solution could exponentially decrease costs attached to the data processed from them.
"At this year's AWS re:Invent we're not only announcing the availability of our HERE platform on AWS Marketplace, but also that HERE location services are now accessible via an integration with Amazon Connect, giving businesses the tools they need to provide outstanding customer service at an optimal cost", said Rohan Thomas, director of strategic alliances at HERE Technologies.
AWS Ground Station antennas are co-located with 19 AWS Regions globally, providing the customers low-latency, local access to other AWS services to process and store this data.
With this ability, developers can easily add more features like location-based services, replenishment, industrial data processing, alarm and messaging, fix and maintenance, logistics, and more, without writing code, AWS said.
The collaboration with AWS will allow Lockheed Martin to deliver robust ground communications that will unlock new benefits for environmental research, scientific studies, security operations, and real-time news media.
Among the four services is AWS IoT SiteWise which is a new managed service that collects, structures, and searches IoT data from industrial facility devices and uses it to analyse equipment and process performance data.
According to AWS, customers can use AWS Ground Station on an as-needed, pay-as-you-go basis. "Today we are taking the next step in this relationship". AWS is kicking off with a pair of ground stations and says it will have a total of a dozen up and running by the middle of next year.
"With this new system, the image will be crystal clear and this will be crucial for application in autonomous vehicles", Scott said.
"Access to geospatial information gives customers the confidence to make critical decisions".
In a recent report, BCC Research estimated that the satellite communications global market will reach almost $7.5 billion by 2022, up from almost $4.6 billion in 2017 - indicatingn a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5 per cent. "The combination of Lockheed Martin Verge and AWS Cloud will allow multiple satellites to downlink simultaneously, which will increase satellite constellation throughput and reduce latency for our customers".
It is partnering with several satellite companies including Spire Global, DigitalGlobe and BlackSky.
