Unlike its plants making passenger cars, many of GM's plants producing its higher-margin trucks and SUVs are running on three shifts, with some running six and sometimes seven days a week to keep up wih demand. All of which assumes that they really, truly do intend to close the plant, though, instead of essentially holding the jobs for ransom to see what Trump and the state government in OH will offer them to keep it open.
GM is calling the production halt of these two United States plants a "proactive" part of its efforts to transform its product development.
General Motors Co.'s plan to cancel production at USA factories and cut thousands of jobs drew a swift rebuke in the industrial heartland where President Donald Trump posted surprising electoral wins premised on his pledge to restore manufacturing.
The salaried reductions amount to 15 percent of GM's North American white-collar workforce of 54,000.
In addition to cutting staff and unallocating plants, the company will also work on "engineering in advanced technologies", attempt to improve "quality and speed to market" and invest more in "next-generation battery-electric architectures", the GM news release states.
The plan to lop 15 percent of salaried workers follows a round of buyouts that GM offered to about a quarter of its longer-tenured workforce at the end of October.
Then again, GM isn't Carrier. "And in return, GM has turned its back on us when we need them the most".
Consultancy LMC estimates that Lordstown will operate at just 31 percent of production capacity this year.
As part of the announcement, G-M said it's scrapping several vehicle models including the Chevy Impala and the Chevy Volt. When, not if, a recession hits - and we're about due - it'll be hard politically for the company to justify layoffs.
"We're going to continue to explore all opportunities that allow us to be more efficient with our investments, more efficient with our capital", she said.
"For decades, workers in the Mahoning Valley have made a commitment to GM, and today GM let Northeast Ohio down", said Sen.
GM, according to its contract with Unifor, must give a year notice regarding a plant closure. GM "better damn well open a new plant [in Ohio] very quickly", and stop manufacturing cars in China, Trump told The Wall Street Journal.
With US vehicle sales lagging, several auto plants have fallen to just one shift, including its Hamtramck and Lordstown assembly plants.
GM is shedding cars largely because it doesn't make money on them, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note to investors.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "deeply disappointed" by the decision to shut the Oshawa, Ontario plant.
OH lawmakers urged GM to reconsider.
Months later, though, Trump imposed new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum that increased prices for many American manufacturers, including carmakers.
The meeting had been planned prior to Monday's announcement of the job cuts, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity about a meeting that hasn't been publicly announced.
