Speaking on the occasion of World AMR awareness week, Federal Minister for National Health Services Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC), Mr. Aamir Mehmood Kiyani, informed that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) containment is a major priorityof Government of Pakistan and also has been has included in national public health agenda. "Incorrect use of antibiotics, especially overuse, is making it harder to treat many infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and salmonellosis, as the antibiotics are becoming less effective", added Dr. Al Khal.
According to World Health Organization, surveys done in various countries showed that many patients believed that antibiotics would cure viral infections that cause fever, coughs and colds.
"The rampant use of antibiotics for treatment of common colds is alarming as most colds/flu/coughs are caused by viruses which are not susceptible to antibiotics". Because one of the main reasons for the development of antibiotic resistance is overuse of antibiotics and lack of treatment.
"Every day, our clinicians are witnessing the damaging effects of antibiotic resistance which threaten our ability to treat common infectious diseases, " said Dr al-Maslamani. They must be used in a responsible manner by avoiding antibiotics to treat common viral infections, such as flu and diarrhea, he said, adding that when necessary antibiotics must be taken in correct doses and only after proper diagnosis by a qualified medical practitioner. Never take antibiotics prescribed for someone else and do not reuse any of the old prescriptions.
Robles, however, said the government needs to address the issue of access and affordability of antibiotics to protect the poverty-stricken who might contract AMR from their inability to continue the prescribed intake of medicine.
Antibiotic use in U.S. farming is six times higher per livestock unit than in the United Kingdom, according to the alliance, and cattle in particular receive 13 times as much antibiotic medicine as in the UK.
"We're really at this flawless storm level and it filters down to not every Canadian - not every Canadian is currently affected by this - but we are getting everyday Canadians getting affected by it now and it will increasingly become worse", Morris said.
Dr Singh advised people take antibiotics under the guidance of health care professional. Among these are the One Health Approach and the Manual of Procedures for Implementing AMS Programs in Hospitals. "India is going to be heavily impacted by the AMR crisis and we can not afford such delays", says Chandra Bhushan, deputy director general, CSE.
"The Framework identifies opportunities for action and desired outcomes under four pillars: surveillance, stewardship, infection prevention and control, and research and innovation", a spokesperson for the Public Health Agency of Canada said.
