In the House, a group of Democratic lawmakers are determined to ensure Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doesn't become Speaker in January.
That's because a sixth person, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, stood beside them even though his U.S. Senate race against Democrat Bill Nelson is in the middle of a recount filled with lawsuits and unfounded accusations of voter fraud.
Jordan says Republicans must be prepared to fight investigations of Trump and his administration that House Democrats plan when they have the majority in January. Mr. Trump calls him "My Kevin", and McCarthy's name is sometimes mentioned as a potential replacement if the president were to replace his chief of staff.
He fended off a challenge from Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. In recent weeks, McCarthy has taken a harder line on issues such as immigration; he proposed a bill last month to provide full funding to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico, a campaign promise and passion project for President Trump. The GOP did win each of those states but failed to retain the Arizona seat vacated by retiring Senator Jeff Flake as Democrat Kyrsten Sinema defeated Republican Martha McSally by 1.7 percent of the vote.
Oppenhiemer told Fox, "Republicans now have to work with a Democratic majority and they are going to have to decide if they want somebody who is both substantively more conservative, but also extremely more unreasonable in the leadership".
The Democrats seeking to stop Pelosi's rise claim they have the votes to block her. Rep. Kurt Schrader of OR has said Pelosi "doesn't have the votes" to become speaker again, in part because of the newly elected members who have promised to oppose her.
It was a night of historic firsts for women and minority candidates.
Nowhere were the stakes higher than in Orange County, a one-time Republican stronghold where Democrats claimed several GOP-held House seats.
House Democrats will not hold their leadership elections until after Thanksgiving. Kim is clinging to a 122-vote lead over Democrat Gil Cisneros.
GOP Rep. Peter King of NY rose to object, saying his view was that Republicans lost ground over the GOP tax cuts that reduced deductions for some filers.
Most Republicans, though, said the losses don't reflect on Mr. McCarthy.
In the House, Jordan and McCarthy shook hands after a testy two days of closed-door sessions, according to lawmakers in the room for Wednesday's voting.
"I think we are certainly open to finding common ground", said Mr. Brady, citing infrastructure as a possible point of agreement. Unfortunately, I also think he riles up the bigots and gets them to the polls too.
Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot past year during practice for the annual Congressional baseball game, will remain McCarthy's top deputy as Minority Whip, and Liz Cheney will be the conference chairwoman, a position her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, held three decades ago.
