Celebrity website TMZ reported that the Malibu ridge home of Caitlyn Jenner, America's best-known transgender person, was destroyed by the flames on Friday.
The two fires erupted on Thursday as warnings of extreme fire danger covered much of the state because of dry weather and blowing winds.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire", said a statement by the Butte County Sheriff's Department, adding that they had yet to be identified.
"Fire is now burning out of control and heading into populated areas of Malibu", the city said in a statement online.
The flames destroyed hundreds of homes, a hospital, a gas station, several restaurants and numerous vehicles in Paradise, officials said.
The devastation has been swift since the fire broke out at 2:25 p.m. Thursday in Ventura County south of Simi Valley, pushed by strong Santa Ana winds. No new growth was reported on the larger of the two fires, which stands at 109 square miles (282 square kilometers), and firefighters now have the blaze 5 percent contained.
"Mother Nature has given us a short reprieve ... but we know tomorrow Mother Nature's gonna turn her fan back on and the winds are going to start blowing", Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen told reporters.

The two bodies were found severely burned inside a auto on a long residential driveway in Malibu, Los Angeles County sheriff's Chief John Benedict said. So far, three of the more than 3,200 firefighters deployed have been injured. Fire officials said it was also moving toward the ocean.
In Northern California, a fire incinerated most of the town of Paradise. But thousands remained under evacuation orders due to the Woolsey fire. Osby noted that a November 1993 wildfire in Malibu destroyed more than 270 homes and said he would not be surprised if the total from the current fire would be higher.
In southern California, authorities said around 105,000 people had been evacuated.
On Saturday, in Los Angeles County, the 14,164 hectares Woolsey Fire was threatening 75,000 homes and more than 200,000 people were under mandatory evacuation early on Saturday.
