Nine people were declared dead and tens of thousands evacuated Friday as fierce wildfires raged across the western USA state of California, with one rapidly spreading blaze threatening the famed resort of Malibu.
The Butte County Sheriff's Office confirmed later Friday that there were four more deaths but did not provide any other details.
The destructive Camp Fire has already burned over 18,000 acres of Butte County, Northern California as of Thursday afternoon, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
When the order came to evacuate, it was like the entire town of 27,000 residents chose to leave at once, they said.
"This was a rapidly moving fire", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record.
Meanwhile, portions of Southern California remained under siege early Friday as two large fires threatened numerous Ventura County communities. "I'm driving through fire as we speak".
Areas of northern and southern California continue to be evacuated as the fiery whirlwind of the the Camp Fire struck today.
Residents raced to escape on roads that turned into tunnels of fire as thick smoke darkened the daytime sky on Thursday, wiping out what a Cal Fire official said was a couple of thousand structures.
Officials had also ordered an evacuation of Topanga Canyon as the fire spread to 14,000 acres with no containment.
The Concow School sent its 60 students home, but many faculty members are anxious about their homes, said Golden Feather Union Elementary School District Superintendent Josh Peete.
Driven by hot desert winds, the wildfire raced into Paradise, devouring the equivalent of 80 football pitches a minute.
The fire remains at 5 percent contained.
The Woolsey fire destroyed dozens homes on Friday, including Caitlyn Jenner's, forcing total evacuations of Malibu and Hidden Hills in one of the worst L.A. blazes in recent memory.
Thousands are also without power in the region, which is just north of Sacramento.
"We had to drive through flames to make it out safely", she said.
"Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home".
Actress Alyssa Milano, one of Kardashian's neighbours in Calabasas, wrote on Twitter that she was also evacuated.
Her husband, the rapper Kanye West, said their family was "safe and close". He had tweeted about 200 times by Friday morning regarding the Camp Fire and people and pets reported missing or found, including some of their home addresses for use with the Red Cross registry.
