In Missouri, voters passed one of three unrelated medical marijuana measures that made it onto the ballot. New York may be the next state to approve medicinal or recreational marijuana usage, with New York State health officials reporting that "the positive effects of regulating an adult marijuana market in NYS outweigh the potential negative impacts".
After a very exciting midterm election, it looks like a few more states will have legal cannabis. Voters rejected a similar measure in North Dakota, while the legalization for medical use passed in both Utah and Missouri. But the Michigan Legislature still has to write laws that will govern the state's licensing system for marijuana businesses, and then the businesses will have to get proper licensing.
"I started to see that this was a lifetime chance because this is a massive shift where you know there are consumers who use this product and now that it was legal the market could be even larger", he said, adding that he expects that Canadian cannabis companies such as his own will eventually expand into the USA once marijuana becomes legal.
"Thanks to the unflagging efforts of patients and advocates, Missourians who could benefit from medical marijuana will soon be able to use it without fear of being treated like criminals", said Matthew Sweich, deputy director of the Marijuana Policy Project. Within a residence, adults will be permitted to grow up to twelve marijuana plants and/or possess up to ten ounces of marijuana.
Just like the states that legalized before MI, businesses looking to operate dispensaries and the like will have to be state licensed marijuana.
In Illinois, Democrat JB Pritzker successfully ran on a pro-legalization platform to unseat first-term Republican Governor Bruce Rauner.
In all, 155 statewide initiatives were on ballots across the country.
Several states were added to the growing list of legal places to smoke marijuana. More than 60% of Florida voters voted in favor of a measure to restore voting rights to more than a million felons who have completed their sentences, reports CNN.
