- The eyes of the nation are on Georgia and the race for the Governor's seat.
Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) opposes in-state cultivation of medical marijuana, even though thousands of medical cannabis patients in Georgia lack reasonable access to the low-THC oils they are allowed to possess.
It's not just Abrams who has friends in high places.
Though sometimes mentioned as a 2020 presidential candidate, Winfrey has demurred on her intentions. "She's a great speaker, but I liked her better when she was giving away Toyotas and refrigerators", Fox News host Laura Ingraham said on her show on Thursday night in reaction to Winfrey's speech.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump will make a trip to the Peach State to campaign for Kemp in Macon. In a Thursday speech delivered before a town hall, Winfrey praised gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and advised people to honor their ancestors by exercising their right to vote. The icon made it very clear, as she has before, that she has no plans of running for president, as per People's report.
A white supremacist group connected to racist robocalls attacking Andrew Gillum have also attacked Stacey Abrams and Oprah. "I'm not trying to test any waters", she said.
The robocall went out to Georgia voters, but it is unclear how many received it.
"I'm here today because of the men and because of the women who were lynched, who were humiliated, who were discriminated against, who were suppressed, who were repressed and oppressed, for the right for the equality at the polls", Winfrey said.
Republicans in Georgia, including Kemp, have pushed for strict voter ID laws, citizenship checks and aggressive voter roll maintenance in the name of protecting elections against fraud and noncitizens voting.
Abrams is looking to maximize turnout among nonwhites, liberal urban whites and just enough whites everywhere else, including a smattering of moderates and suburban Republicans who are disenchanted with Trump - a considerable overlap with the fan base that propelled Winfrey to her billionaire icon status.
Winfrey is in Georgia in support of Abrams, who hopes to become Georgia's first black female governor. He added, "I stand against any person or organization that peddles this type of unbridled hate and unapologetic bigotry".
