But for reasons unknown, the plan changed a couple of weeks prior to BlizzCon, and the Diablo 4 reveal was scrapped. Looking at the timeline of events, earlier this year Blizzard did seem to be building up to a bigger blowout for Diablo, which was abruptly halted as fan expectations began to climb. According to a Kotaku report, however, the reaction to Diablo Immortal's announcement could've been very different, as the site says that Blizzard planned to confirm Diablo 4 is in development but bailed on the reveal before last Friday.
Diablo IV is in development and an official confirmation was supposed to happen at BlizzCon 2018, sources tell Kotaku's Jason Schreier. We've heard from the hardcore Diablo fans that feel spurned, the ex-Blizzard producer that thinks Blizzard dug its own grave, and the developers themselves that have continually stressed that multiple Diablo projects are in the works.
Meanwhile, fans of the franchise continue to be unhappy about Blizzard's Diablo moves, voicing their concerns online.
No footage was to be shown and Diablo IV wasn't to be revealed in a proper manner, just a confirmation from Blizzard's Allan Adham.
In August, Diablo Associate Community Manager, Brandy Camel, said they had numerous Diablo projects that were being worked on.
"Diablo fans reacted as though, after a 12-year relationship, Blizzard had taken them out to a candlelit dinner and a long walk upon a moonlit beach, then gifted them a pearl necklace".
Additional Blizzcon 2018 announcements included "Warcraft III: Reforged", a 2019 remake of the 2002 strategy classic that became a "Dota 2" and "League of Legends" precursor; Ashe, a new character for team action game "Overwatch", as well as a Kellogg's cereal tie-in called Luci-oh's for December; and an expansion called "Rastakhan's Rumble" for digital card game "Hearthstone" on Dec. 4.
Blizzard has been attempting damage control since the Diablo Immortal announcement hit the web, so at this point, it is hard to lean one way or the other.
