"The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment sees the countries involved commit to a "circular economy" approach to plastics, preventing them from becoming waste and ensuring they don't end up in the environment", Eugenie Sage, associate minister for the environment, said.
Signatories have agreed to publish annual data on their progress, with targets become "increasingly ambitious" over the coming years. Those governments that sign the commitment pledge to put in place policies and enabling conditions to support the Global Commitment's targets and vision. Individual targets within the commitment were set, and the collective ambition among signatories will grow with time.
PepsiCo's spokesperson was quoted saying that protecting the planet is hugely important to their company, which is now focused towards achieving 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable packaging by 2025.

The commitment has been adopted by 290 other organizations including numerous world's largest packaging producers, brands, retailers and recyclers, as well as governments and nongovernmental organizations... Five venture capital funds have also pledged more than $200 million to support the initiative.

In an attempt to bring that figure down, over 250 brands are addressing the plastic crisis by signing the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. They have also pledged to make all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030.
