The teen - who has been a longterm care patient at the facility for four years - was apparently diagnosed with the virus several days before the NJ Health Department was notified of the outbreak, the WABC article says.
The state's Department of Health said the victim was a "medically fragile" child who had a confirmed case of adenovirus. The unidentified child died Saturday evening at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, the department said.
He added: "The department continues to work very closely with the facility to ensure that all infection control measures are being followed".
Adenovirus can cause bronchitis, pneumonia and pink eye, but is especially unsafe to those with already compromised immune systems. Many will never walk or talk, and some have spent virtually their whole lives there, according to the paper. Twenty-five children have been sickened in the outbreak, as has one staff member at the facility.
"Facility outbreaks are not always preventable, but in response to what we have seen in Wanaque, we are taking aggressive steps to minimize the chance they occur among the most vulnerable patients in New Jersey", Elnahal said in a statement.
The first report was made September 26, and health officials began to survey the facility on October 10.
The outbreak has attacked children who were already weak with severely compromised immune systems, officials said.
Adenovirus is a respiratory virus that can cause mild or serious illness, though serious illness is less common.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control was assisting state health officials with testing and "expertise", according to the New Jersey Department.
There have been 25 total cases of the virus at the facility. During a site visit last week, inspectors identified "hand-washing deficiencies", and state health officials have barred the center from admitting new patients until the outbreak is past.
The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak.
One of the teams will be deployed to the Wanaque Centre for Nursing and Rehabilitation in November.
