The state's Big Bend area, where the storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, could see up to 12 feet of storm surge, according to forecasters. A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 74 to 95 miles per hour.
Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, and Hurlburt and Eglin officials said in social media posts over the -past two days that they were watching the storm as it develops.
It would impact 35 Florida counties - Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson, Calhoun, Gulf, Gadsden, Liberty, Franklin, Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson, Madison, Taylor, Columbia, Hamilton, Suwanee, Lafayette, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy, Citrus, Pasco, Hernando, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Alachua, Union, Bradford and Baker Counties.
West Florida: The surf looks flat on Monday and likely into early Tuesday.
The governor also activated 1,250 National Guardsmen and said he would waive tolls for residents who were evacuating.
Forecasters say the storm will gain more intensity through Tuesday, with a chance it will weaken somewhat as it nears land in Florida.
