"While this agreement is certainly no cure-all, it is hopefully a start to repairing our trade relationships around the world, to restoring our reputation as a reliable trading partner, and to resolving longstanding issues with discrimination against USA wheat".
Canada is also reported to have secured some protections for automobile industry against potential United States tariffs.
"Reaching deals on the issues that are hurting Utah businesses the most", said Hansen, "such as the escalating trade dispute with China and the continuing steel and aluminum tariffs, is essential to reinforce American leadership of the open, rules-based global trade system at the core of our economic success". However, under USMCA, new quotas will be set which are expected to increase market access for USA farmers.
How come NAFTA has been saved?
Trump had been critical of Freeland the day before at a post-United Nations press conference, taking a shot at Canada's top negotiator during a long diatribe about the NAFTA talks. The US president has regularly called it a "disaster" for American workers and manufacturers.

The agreement was announced just before a Sunday midnight deadline imposed by Washington and a rare, late-night emergency Cabinet meeting convened by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss the deal.
What's been the reaction and what happens now?
Peter Navarro, White House trade adviser, said on Sunday Morning Futures, that the goal for the agreement is to restore "North America as a manufacturing powerhouse". It was an especially good deal for American farmers, because it eliminated Mexican agricultural tariffs.
Following the announcement, the Canadian dollar rose to its highest value since May against the USA dollar. However, one of its harshest critics has been none other than the President of the U.S. - Donald Trump; who publicly showcased his disdain towards the agreement stating that it took unfair advantage of the United States.
