Hollywood rallied behind the Yale alumni, and Tyler Perry voiced his support and offered him an acting job on one of his shows.
Earlier this week, Perry tweeted to Owens to "come join us". The show films in Atlanta, which according to TMZ's source, is exactly where Owens will be flying to as plans are for him to take part in shooting starting next week. The specifics surrounding his role have not yet been revealed.
He offered Owens a role after photos of the actor working as a cashier at Trader Joe's were mocked online.
Now Owens has a happy ending and is able to do what he loves on a hit show connected to two of the biggest names in entertainment.
Owens - who has also worked on TV shows It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and That's So Raven - said he had worked at Trader Joe's in Clifton, New Jersey, for 15 months. But he stressed that "every job is worthwhile and valuable", adding that what's important is the honor of the working person and the dignity of the work. So, that's a very, very generous thing for him to say.
CNN has reached out to reps for Owens.
"Honestly, shame on everyone here, except of course Geoffrey Owens, who (as far as I know) has never gone the route of many actors and former actors - never disgraced himself in the media, never gotten into trouble with the law", Nolte.
The "Cosby Show" alum made headlines last week after being spotted working at Trader Joe's, then getting job-shamed for it, then receiving an avalanche of support from social media. "OK, that's cool, that's great, but basically I left at that point because I felt like, just for my personal sake, my dignity and my emotional wellbeing, I didn't want to be in the store while I felt like people might be staking out the place as they did, actually".
