Stills is one of the players who has been outspoken in his support of Colin Kaepernick, who was the first National Football League player to kneel during the anthem two seasons ago.
Receiver Albert Wilson and defensive end Robert Quinn joined Stills in protesting before Dolphins games during the exhibition season, and are expected to continue their protests at the team's season opener Sunday against Tennessee. Wilson, in his first year with the Dolphins, protested at times last year with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kaepernick sparked controversy when he sat, then knelt, during the National Anthem before several 2016 NFL preseason and regular-season games. If the players stood proudly for our Flag and Anthem, and it is all shown on broadcast, maybe ratings could come back?
"They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated", Kaepernick said in the tweet, which was accompanied by a picture of the Dolphins kneeling before their game.
President Donald Trump has been perhaps the loudest critic of Kaepernick and the protests he inspired. Both have said they plan to do protest throughout the season unless change is made. ESPN showed the anthem last season after the shooting in Las Vegas, after the first weekend of demonstrations and when the Monday night game fell on the 16th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The NFL unilaterally passed a policy requiring players to stand at attention for the anthem or to stay in the locker room or in the tunnel under the stands.
Kaepernick, a leader of the movement against social injustice that has prompted player protests during the national anthem, is among the faces of Nike's 30th anniversary "Just Do It" campaign.
