Further offshore, another system, Florence, has rapidly coalesced into a category 2 hurricane and appears to barreling toward the tropical eastern Atlantic coastline.

Coast Guard inspectors flew over ports in MS and Alabama to evaluate the facilities, which remained closed on Wednesday morning to most traffic, Petty Officer 3rd Class Alexandria Preston said.

The heaviest rain from Gordon will be from the northern Gulf Coast to parts of Arkansas, and will last through Thursday.
Gordon formed around southern Florida on Monday before it swept across the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters said it was possible Gordon's winds might meet the 120 km/h threshold to be a hurricane before making landfall later Tuesday. "I think cause we're on the east side of the storm, we're going to get some bad weather, but I don't think it's going to be too bad".
Energy companies and port operators along the U.S. Gulf Coast took steps on Wednesday to resume operations after Tropical Storm Gordon shut more than 9 percent of the region's oil and gas output.
