Britt had a hamstring injury and never took part fully in training camp.
With the release of Kenny Britt on Wednesday, added pressure now falls on New England's remaining wide receivers to step up. Britt signed with New England in December after an ugly fallout in Cleveland that led to his release from the Browns.
The team also signed veteran Eric Decker to a one-year deal on August 3, although he has struggled at times with dropped passes since joining the Patriots.
With Mitchell, Matthews and Britt now all out of the picture, that leaves the Patriots with a receiving depth chart that includes Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Eric Decker, Cordarrelle Patterson and rookie Braxton Berrios. He had 18 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns in nine games for the Browns before his release. Britt was a healthy scratch for all three playoff games.
Brady swears by Guerrero and the work he does to keep the now 41-year-old quarterback's muscle pliable; he's said in the past that Guerrero is "a huge, huge reason why I'm still playing".
Guerrero had always been a fixture on the sideline during home and away games for the Patriots the last few seasons but those privileges were revoked last season. Britt stated earlier this week he felt he was missing valuable reps. The gap turned out to be insurmountable.
Until then, he plans to maximize his time with team in three distinct ways: deepen his conditioning, hone his timing with Tom Brady and help develop the younger wideouts around him. "Honestly, that's all you can ask for", Edelman said.
"I'm glad we got two games under our belt but both have been at home and it's definitely the travel and so forth".
