There's not a single study showing any significant health benefits to coconut oil consumption; in fact, coconut oil is more unsafe than lard according to Michels, as it nearly exclusively contains saturated fatty acids - acids that can clog the coronary arteries.
In the video, Michels does not hold back, saying coconut oil is "one of the worst foods you can eat".
Last year, the American Heart Association (AHA) updated its dietary guidelines, recommending people that they stay away from saturated fats, such as those found abundantly in coconut oil. Not unlike lard, at room temperature Coconut oil is solid and that's due to its high sat-fat content. This review had shown that coconut oil can raise the levels of HDL cholesterol but also raises total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides over and above unsaturated fats such as those contained in olive oil.
Dr Michels also said consumption of so-called superfoods was unnecessary because we already get enough nutrition from everyday foods like carrots, cherries, and apricots. "People think of the benefits of coconut oil, thinking it has fewer calories, helps you lose weight, some people like the flavor of it, but we still have to consider it as a saturated fat", she said.
United Kingdom guidelines encourage people to swap saturated fats for unsaturated fats.
It might be all downhill from here for coconut oil.
The AHA found that replacing saturated fat intake with polyunsaturated vegetable oil greatly reduced the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, similar to the numbers achieved by prescribed drug treatment. While the scientific world is still debating whether saturated fatty acids really are the work of the devil, others say with certainty that that's the case. As such, coconut oil works as a great remedy for atopic dermatitis and enhances the barrier of the skin as well as protects you from UV radiation. Like with other fatty foods, enjoying coconut oil minimally isn't going to lead to heart disease later on.
However, if coconut oil is something you would struggle to give up completly, the best step you can take is to moderate how often you indulge and lower your portions.
